Milwaukee Judge Arrested Amid Immigration Controversy
A Milwaukee County Circuit judge, Hannah Dugan, was arrested by the FBI on Friday and charged with obstructing justice by allegedly assisting an undocumented immigrant evade arrest. Dugan faces two federal charges for obstructing and concealing Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican immigrant who, after being deported in 2013, was found illegally back in the U.S. due to a domestic abuse arrest.
During an initial court appearance, she was released, but the incident has intensified scrutiny on judicial conduct regarding immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that Dugan deliberately misled federal agents, creating potential risks to public safety. It was reported that on April 18, when federal agents arrived at the courthouse intending to arrest Flores-Ruiz, Dugan reacted with anger, asserting the need for a different warrant and confronted the agents in a public hallway.
Witnesses claim Dugan directed Flores-Ruiz and his attorney to a nonpublic area, allowing them to escape out a "jury door," eluding the agents until they eventually caught up outside.
The Trump administration has framed the arrest as part of a broader crackdown on alleged judicial misconduct related to immigration. Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized that obstructing justice, especially in cases involving domestic violence, would not be tolerated.
However, opponents, including Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, condemned the arrest, arguing it undermines the judiciary and could deter residents from seeking justice in court. Amidst growing concerns, Democratic representatives, including Gwen Moore, labeled the arrest as an alarming overreach by federal authorities, signaling a potential threat to judicial independence.
