Wisconsin Attorney General Joins Lawsuit Against Trump Administration Over Educational Funding
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Attorney General Josh Kaul, along with 18 other state attorneys general, has filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration’s directive from the Department of Education regarding admissions and funding practices in schools. The lawsuit contends that the department’s request to certify the use of race preferences in various educational programs is vague and unsupported, posing a potential threat of federal funding cuts.
In a statement released on Friday, Kaul emphasized that there is no lawful reason for schools to comply with the unclear guidelines, which could jeopardize vital educational funding. Wisconsin receives approximately $554.1 million annually in federal support, essential for programs benefiting students from diverse backgrounds.
Wisconsin’s State Superintendent has refused to sign the certification, stating that schools are already in compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin. She expressed concern over the federal request’s ambiguity and underscored that the state’s schools are adhering to the existing legal framework.
Kaul’s lawsuit also includes support from attorneys general in states such as California, New York, and Michigan, among others.
