SUNY Canton Engineering Technology Students Secure Third Place in Bridge Competition | Education

CANTON—SUNY Canton’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Steel Bridge Team Shines at Regional Competition

The SUNY Canton ASCE Student Chapter’s Steel Bridge Team proudly secured third place overall at the 2025 American Institute of Steel Construction Regional Student Steel Bridge Competition held recently at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point. Competing against leading institutions, the team also achieved third in both Construction Speed and Construction Economy.

Mathew Greene from Waddington, who is set to graduate from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology program, played a pivotal role in fabricating the bridge. Greene learned welding under the guidance of Neil A. Haney in his freshman year, aiming to construct the college’s entry. Unlike many colleges that outsource fabrication, Greene and his teammates crafted their bridge in-house over two years.

Dr. Adrienne C. Rygel, an associate professor in the program, praised the hard work and dedication of her students, particularly highlighting Greene’s extensive efforts during winter and spring terms. Chapter Secretary Owen J. Thompson represented the team at the National Mead Paper Competition, presenting on the ethical responsibilities of civil engineers in infrastructure disasters.

Faculty advisor Dr. Saeid Haji Ghasemali commended the team’s engineering skills and coordination, noting the competition capstone showcased a year of meticulous design and preparation. The students managed each aspect of the bridge’s creation, from conceptual design to final fabrication, with only faculty support.

Team buildup included key members such as Vice President Nathan A. St. Louis, alongside other dedicated participants. Faculty and staff also provided indispensable support, ensuring a collaborative and successful effort.

As the team looks forward to next year’s competition, Rygel expressed optimism for their ongoing success. “The excitement and preparation continue,” she stated.
