Honolulu, HI – A groundbreaking study set to be presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) 2025 Meeting reveals that innovative DNA mapping technology could significantly enhance the understanding of genetic diseases. The study highlights a novel method, HiFi long-read sequencing, which identified ten times more genomic imprinting than previously documented.

Genomic imprinting, where only one parent’s gene expression influences a child’s genetic profile, plays a critical role in many rare pediatric diseases. Researchers emphasized that this advanced sequencing technology has the potential to illuminate patterns in DNA, providing clues about which parent’s genes are implicated in these conditions.

Elin Grundberg, PhD, from the Genomic Medicine Center at Children’s Mercy Kansas City and the study’s presenting author, articulated the significance of genomic research. “The novel HiFi long-read sequencing technology helps researchers uncover insights into human development and potentially identifies diseases that have eluded science.”

The research involved more than 200 genetic samples derived from placentas of nearly 70 six-to-eight-week-old embryos. This extensive analysis underscores the technology’s capability to delve deeper into the genetic factors contributing to rare diseases, promising advancements in pediatric healthcare and genetic research.

As new technologies continue to emerge, the future of genomic medicine looks promising, with potential implications for diagnosing and treating conditions that have long challenged researchers and clinicians alike. The findings from this study are expected to pave the way for further exploration into the genetic underpinnings of rare diseases, offering hope for improved outcomes in pediatric health.

The PAS 2025 Meeting will take place from April 24-28, bringing together experts to discuss the latest advancements in pediatric research.
