Critics: Wisconsin Judge Made Errors, But Federal Overreach in Arrests Is Unwarranted

FBI Arrest of Wisconsin Judge Sparks Controversy

(NewsNation) — The recent arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan by the FBI, following allegations that she aided a migrant in evading immigration authorities, has ignited debate over the Trump administration’s tactics. Dugan allegedly escorted 30-year-old Eduardo Flores-Ruiz and his attorney out of her courtroom when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents sought his arrest. According to court documents, Flores-Ruiz, charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, had reentered the U.S. after being deported in 2013.

Critics argue that the FBI’s approach was excessive. Former Judge Jeffrey Swartz expressed that Dugan “crossed the line” but criticized the federal response for bypassing normal judicial procedures by issuing an administrative warrant. He argued this method was intended to “intimidate” other judges. Former Acting ICE Director John Sandweg voiced concerns about the public relations fallout for the agency, suggesting a more discreet approach could have been taken.

Both Swartz and Sandweg lamented the challenges and reputational damage resulting from the administration’s handling of such sensitive cases, stating that the situation yielded no clear benefits for any party involved.
