Packers CEO Murphy discusses NFL’s positive view of Green Bay leading up to draft on ‘UpFront’

Green Bay residents are gearing up for the NFL Draft, set to take place in the league’s smallest market beginning Thursday. Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy expressed excitement about the economic impact and legacy the event will leave on Wisconsin and Green Bay. The Packers estimate that the three-day event will bring in over $90 million statewide, with $20 million specifically benefitting the Green Bay region.

It took nearly a decade for Murphy and Green Bay officials to secure the bid for the NFL Draft. Upgrades to Lambeau Field and the development of the Titletown district were key factors in winning the bid. NFL executive vice president Peter O’Reilly emphasized that Super Bowl-like security measures will be in place for the event.

State Rep. David Steffen is confident that lawmakers will approve an additional $1.25 million to cover two-thirds of the public safety expenses related to hosting the event. This request aligns with the additional $1 million included in Governor Tony Evers’ state budget. There is bipartisan support for the funding, with Steffen emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the event is a success.

The NFL Draft in Green Bay is expected to draw 250,000 fans, showcasing the unique community spirit of the city. The league’s decision to host the event in Green Bay is seen as a natural extension of where the draft should go, providing a memorable experience for fans and players alike.
