Allison Letcher, a former college basketball player, has fulfilled her childhood dream of playing football by becoming the quarterback for UW-Stout’s first women’s flag football team. Thanks to a partnership with the NFL and the Minnesota Vikings, UW-Stout and five other Midwest colleges have formed a women’s flag football league. This initiative was made possible by a $140,000 contribution, with the Green Bay Packers also showing support by donating to high schools in Wisconsin to start girls’ flag football teams.
Women’s flag football is the fastest-growing high school sport in the nation and will be included in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The UW-Stout Blue Devils, led by coach Duey Naatz, have quickly embraced this new sport and have shown great progress. Graduate student Adalyn Lehman, a former track and field athlete, has been instrumental in the team’s success, rushing for 100 yards and two touchdowns in a recent game.
The Blue Devils are set to compete in the league’s championship tournament hosted by the Minnesota Vikings on April 26. This new team has not only provided a new opportunity for female athletes like Letcher and Lehman to pursue their passion for football but has also paved the way for other colleges in Wisconsin, such as Bryant & Stratton College, Marion University, Beloit College, and Ripon College, to follow suit and establish women’s flag football programs.
