University of Wisconsin preparing for substantial rise in expenses preceding revenue sharing

The University of Wisconsin athletic department is projected to see a 16% increase in expenses for the 2025-26 season, reaching a record high of $198.895M. This budget plan has received unanimous approval from an Athletic Board committee, with most of the growth attributed to revenue sharing with athletes. The increase in operating expenses, up 7% over the previous year, is due to inflationary increases in travel costs and additional road trips for the football team. The budget for sports other than football shows an average increase of 4.8%, reflecting the school’s commitment to supporting all 23 sport programs. The additional expenses are planned to be covered by more money from the Big Ten, higher ticket prices, and increased use of donations. The approval process for the budget will continue with the full Athletic Board and then move into the hands of campus officials. This increase in expenses comes at a time when the athletic department will begin sharing revenue with players, pending final approval of antitrust cases against the NCAA and major conferences.
