Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Communications at the University of Wisconsin, Justin Doherty, is set to retire on Friday after more than 30 years of dedicated service to the institution. During his time at Wisconsin, Doherty played a key role in promoting the accomplishments of the university’s athletic programs and was instrumental in the success of the men’s basketball and football teams.
Starting his career in college athletics as an associate sports information director at Michigan State in 1984, Doherty has had a long and illustrious career in the field. He joined the Wisconsin Badgers in 1994 and has since been a vital part of the athletic department, showcasing his expertise, integrity, and passion for promoting Wisconsin Athletics.
Throughout his tenure at Wisconsin, Doherty was the primary publicist for the men’s basketball team during their 2000 Final Four run and served as the main contact for the football team from 2001-07, a period where the team played in six bowl games and had numerous players competing for national awards.
In addition to his work in communications, Doherty also transitioned into an administrative role in 2008, managing various aspects of brand communications, marketing, and community relations within the department. He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the College Sports Information Directors of America’s 2011 Arch Ward Award.
As Doherty prepares to embark on the next chapter of his life, he looks back on his time at Wisconsin with gratitude and appreciation for the friendships and support he has received along the way. His contributions to the university will leave a lasting impact, and he will be greatly missed by colleagues and fans alike.
