Senator Chris Van Hollen met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador after the Trump administration mistakenly deported him. Van Hollen was denied entry to the prison where Abrego Garcia is being held, but he was able to pass along a message of love to Abrego Garcia’s wife. Van Hollen’s visit comes after the Trump administration failed to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return to the U.S., despite a Supreme Court ruling requiring them to do so. The administration’s resistance has been criticized by Van Hollen as an attempt to cover up the wrongful deportation.
Abrego Garcia first entered the U.S. in 2011 and was protected from deportation by a court order in 2019. Van Hollen’s meeting with Abrego Garcia gave hope to his wife, who has not been able to speak with him since he was transferred to the Central American facility.
Van Hollen also met with human rights groups, local embassy staff, and Salvadoran officials during his visit. While Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has resisted calls to return Abrego Garcia to the U.S., a federal appeals court rejected the administration’s effort to put on hold the requirement to facilitate his return.
Maryland officials are demanding verifiable proof of Abrego Garcia’s health and safety, as his family has not received confirmation since his deportation. Van Hollen’s meeting with Abrego Garcia has brought attention to the case and has renewed hope for his family and community fighting for justice.
