The rise of Michael Gableman: A case study in the increasing politicization of the court

Former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman has agreed to surrender his law license for three years due to misconduct during his investigation of the 2020 election. Gableman’s career took a downturn after he attended the 2016 Republican National Convention, causing disturbances and being escorted out of the convention hall. His involvement in Trump’s administration and supporting election fraud claims led him to the investigation of the 2020 election, which cost taxpayers $2.8 million and found no evidence of fraud.

Gableman’s rise in his legal career was marked by conservative support and attacks on opponents, culminating in his election to the Supreme Court in 2008. However, his tenure was controversial, with accusations of ethical lapses and involvement in baseless conspiracy theories. His behavior, including attending the Republican convention and acting belligerently, led to his downfall in the party.

After being fired by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos for poor performance in the election investigation, Gableman faced additional scrutiny for misconduct allegations. Despite initially denying the charges, he ultimately agreed to surrender his license for three years. This marks a significant fall from grace for a former top judge who went from upholding the law to being embroiled in political controversies and legal violations.
