Department of Transportation: Prioritizing Safety for Adopt-A-Highway Volunteers

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is reminding drivers to prioritize road safety in order to protect Adopt-A-Highway volunteers. Established in 1991, the Adopt-A-Highway program allows groups to volunteer and help keep Wisconsin’s roads litter-free by collecting trash and recyclables. WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman expressed gratitude towards the nearly 15,000 volunteers who participate in the program each year.

In 2024, Wisconsin Adopt-A-Highway groups collected over 170 tons of trash and recyclables, with nearly 5,500 volunteer hours reported. WisDOT encourages more people to get involved, as there are still over 2,700 miles of state highways available for adoption. Volunteers are required to clean their assigned two-mile highway segment at least three times per year and follow specific age requirements.

Automated forms on the Adopt-A-Highway website simplify reporting cleanup efforts, with county highway crews handling proper disposal of materials. WisDOT provides safety equipment and training materials for volunteers, while emphasizing the importance of road safety for drivers passing by these volunteer groups.
