Wisconsin GOP bill limiting certain flag displays moves forward in committee | Local Politics

The proposed Wisconsin bill, Assembly Bill 58, has passed out of the Committee on State Affairs. This bill would restrict which flags can be displayed on government buildings to only the American flag and the Wisconsin state flag. The authors, Rep. Jerry O’Connor and Sen. Dan Feyen, introduced the bill in response to Gov. Tony Evers’ decision to fly Pride and Juneteenth flags at the state capitol building. The legislation includes exceptions for specific flags, such as those representing veterans, armed forces, American Indian tribes, and first responders.

However, the bill explicitly prohibits flags related to political parties, social causes, sexual orientation, gender identity, racial identity, and extremist groups. It also restricts flags recognizing holidays listed under Wisconsin statutes. The bill respects tribal sovereignty and exempts private property from the restrictions.

If passed by both state houses, the bill is likely to face a veto from the Democratic governor. The proposed legislation is intended to limit flag displays on government buildings and promote a more restrictive policy on flag flying in Wisconsin.
