Clerk resigns after failing to count nearly 200 ballots

The municipal clerk in Madison, Wisconsin, Maribeth Witzel-Behl, has resigned amidst investigations into her failure to count nearly 200 absentee ballots in the November elections. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway’s office announced Witzel-Behl’s resignation on Monday, although she had submitted it on Thursday with a grace period to change her mind. The ballots that were not counted did not impact any election results, but four voters have filed claims for $175,000 each as a precursor to a potential lawsuit. This incident comes after Witzel-Behl had previously sent out duplicate absentee ballots in September. The city had launched an internal investigation into both incidents to ensure public confidence in the clerk’s office. City Attorney Mike Haas has been serving as interim city clerk since Witzel-Behl was suspended in March. The State Elections Commission is also investigating the missed ballots. The outcome of these investigations is expected to be released soon. The April 1 spring election in Madison went smoothly under Haas’s supervision. Witzel-Behl had an annual salary of $152,300 before her resignation.
