The increased use of technology and social media platforms among youth in Prayagraj aged between 15 and 25 years is posing a significant risk to their mental health and personality development, according to doctors at MLN Divisional Hospital (Colvin). The doctors reported a rise in cases of mood swings and personality disorders, with 10-15 cases being attended to per month and over 269 cases reported in the past year. Senior psychiatrist Dr Rakesh Paswan highlighted the connection between excessive social media use and personality disorders, stating that certain disorders like histrionic, narcissistic, and borderline personality disorders can be exacerbated by social media use. He explained that chemical changes in the brain, particularly involving dopamine and serotonin, play a crucial role in the development of these disorders.
The impact of increased screen time and online interactions on mental health has led to less physical activity, disrupted sleep patterns, and reduced face-to-face interactions, all of which are essential for mental well-being. Dr Paswan emphasized the importance of awareness campaigns and counseling sessions to address the harmful effects of excessive technology use. Hospital authorities have taken steps to provide examinations, treatment, and counseling for affected individuals in order to mitigate the negative impact on their mental health and well-being. It is crucial for both individuals and society as a whole to recognize the importance of balancing technology use with other activities that promote mental health and well-being.
