Beijing cancels hundreds of flights and closes parks due to high winds and sandstorms

High winds and sandstorms in Beijing led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights and closure of public parks on Saturday. The city’s two international airports, Beijing Capital and Daxing, canceled 693 flights due to the severe weather conditions, with more violent weather expected in the north and along coastal areas. Other parts of China also experienced flight and train cancellations as strong winds reached up to 92 mph in some areas.

The Universal Studios theme park in Beijing, along with historic sites such as the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and Temple of Heaven, were closed due to the weather. Football matches and outdoor events were also suspended to ensure public safety.

High winds and sandstorms are common in China’s dry north, where the Gobi and Taklamakan Deserts are surrounded by grasslands, mountains, and forests. China has been working to combat the impact of sandstorms, especially in cities like Beijing where the storms can reduce visibility, send sand into buildings and clothing, and cause discomfort to the eyes, nose, and ears.

The severe weather conditions in China have caused damage to trees, cars, and older homes, highlighting the importance of ensuring public safety during extreme weather events.
