Wisconsin residents traveled to Washington D.C. to urge members of Congress to prioritize working families and seniors over making devastating cuts to essential programs. Grassroots advocates and community leaders from Opportunity Wisconsin and Fair Share America rallied against the recent budget resolution approved by Congressional Republicans, which will force $1.5 trillion in cuts, including to Medicaid and other critical programs. Despite their efforts, Wisconsin’s Republican congressional delegation, including Reps. Van Orden and Steil, voted in favor of the resolution.
During their visit, Wisconsinites shared personal stories highlighting the impact of potential cuts on their communities. Oliver Winn, a Medicaid beneficiary and SNAP beneficiary, expressed concerns about the harm these cuts could cause to vulnerable individuals. LuAnn Bird, whose husband depends on the VA for his healthcare, emphasized the importance of politicians standing up for working families, seniors, and veterans. Dr. Donn Dexter, a doctor who has worked to keep patients healthy, warned about the dangers of cutting back on essential medical programs.
As Congress moves forward with these proposed cuts, Wisconsin residents are demanding that their elected officials prioritize the well-being of their constituents over tax breaks for the wealthy. They are committed to holding their representatives accountable and advocating for policies that support access to affordable healthcare and critical programs for those who need it most.
