Tuesday’s Prescribed Burn at Lakeshore State Park Managed by Wisconsin DNR

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recently conducted a prescribed burn at Lakeshore State Park in Milwaukee to support healthy ecosystems for plants and animals. Prescribed burns mimic the benefits of wildfires but are done under safer conditions, reducing the prevalence of non-native plant species and improving native prairie success. The burn will enhance prairie habitat for various bird and insect species and reduce runoff. Following the burn, additional native seeding and plant installations will occur this summer. The DNR states that hazardous fuels are reduced, foraging and nesting improve, and carbon storage is enhanced in revitalized vegetation. The public is encouraged to check fire danger before conducting outdoor burning activities and to stay informed about current fire danger, wildfire reports, and burning restrictions on the DNR website. The information in this report comes from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
