Alexander Ovechkin matches Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals in NHL history

Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin scored his 894th career goal on Friday, tying NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most goals scored in league history. Ovechkin, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has lived up to the hype as an offensive force in the league. In addition to tying Gretzky’s career mark, Ovechkin holds various other scoring records, including most power-play goals, most overtime goals, and the most goals scored for a single team.

Ovechkin, currently third in the NHL in goals scored this season, has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies for the league’s top goal scorer, most recently in 2020. He is also a three-time NHL MVP and led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy that year. Since their Cup win, the Capitals have not advanced past the first round of the playoffs, but currently lead the Eastern Conference and rank second overall in the league.

Now 39 years old, Ovechkin has been playing professionally since 2001 and is under contract with Washington until the 2025-26 season. His record-tying goal against the Blackhawks solidifies his place as one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history.
