Yolanda Saldívar, Selena’s murderer, denied parole

Yolanda Saldívar, the woman convicted of killing Tejano music icon Selena in 1995, has been denied parole by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles. She was sentenced to life in prison after fatally shooting Selena at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi. Saldívar was the president of Selena’s fan club and manager of her clothing boutiques before being fired for embezzlement. After her conviction for first-degree murder, she claimed she didn’t mean to kill Selena and that the gun went off accidentally. Selena, known as the “Queen of Tejano” music, had several hit songs and won a Grammy Award in 1994. Her life was portrayed in the 1997 film “Selena” starring Jennifer Lopez. Saldívar’s petition for parole was denied due to the nature of the offense, which showed elements of brutality and violence. In a 2024 docuseries, Saldívar denied embezzling money and made accusations about Selena’s personal life without evidence. The parole panel’s decision to deny parole was based on the belief that Saldívar poses a continuing threat to public safety. The reasons for the denial were not disclosed, but the next parole review is set for March 2030.
