University of Maine follows guidelines limiting transgender participation in sports

The University of Maine System has been found to be in compliance with federal and state laws, as well as NCAA rules, regarding President Trump’s executive order prohibiting transgender women and girls from competing in female sports. The Department of Agriculture previously threatened to suspend federal funding to the university system for Title IX violations, but after a review, it was determined that UMS did not violate Title IX and was compliant with the requirements to protect equal opportunities for women and girls in sports. In response to Trump’s executive order, UMS had temporarily lost USDA funding, but the system confirmed its compliance with Title IX and reassured that it has always been compliant with state and federal laws and NCAA rules regarding transgender athletes. The NCAA has adopted a sport-by-sport approach for transgender athletes, allowing each sport’s national governing body to set policies, but in response to Trump’s order, the NCAA has updated its policy to limit competition in women’s sports to student-athletes assigned female at birth only. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins emphasized that institutions that disregard Trump’s executive order risk losing future funding. The University of Maine System, which includes seven universities across the state, received almost $30 million in USDA funding in the 2024 fiscal year and will continue to leverage federal funds to strengthen education, research, and extension programs.
