Teenagers accused of murder almost a year later after cyclist on their way to work was deliberately hit by stolen vehicle

A video released on Tuesday shows the moments leading up to a stolen vehicle full of youths intentionally striking and killing a bicycle commuter in New Mexico. The 13-year-old driver has been arrested on a charge of murder, while the 15-year-old passenger is still being sought by police. The 11-year-old passenger is too young for criminal prosecution. The state Children, Youth & Families Department will take custody of him and evaluate the situation. The teenagers have been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, leaving the scene of a collision, and unlawful possession of a firearm. The victim, 63-year-old Scott Dwight Habermehl, was an accomplished physicist on his way to work when he was struck. The case was initially considered a hit-and-run until a video taken from inside the stolen car was reported to authorities, leading to the identification and arrests of the youths. The video shows the 15-year-old encouraging the 13-year-old to hit the victim. The 13-year-old was taken into custody with the help of juvenile probation officials. The youths had previous run-ins with law enforcement. Police are continuing to search for the 15-year-old suspect.
