Beloved pet reindeer in Alaska suddenly falls ill after suspected foul play in pen

Star, an iconic reindeer in Anchorage, Alaska, has fallen ill after someone tampered with his pen, resulting in pneumonia, digestion issues, and weight loss. Star’s owner, Albert Whitehead, has been taking him to the vet regularly to try to find a cause for his illness, but the reindeer’s prognosis remains guarded.

Star is the seventh in a line of reindeer named Star, kept in a fenced-in pen attached to Whitehead’s house on the edge of downtown Anchorage for the last seven decades. In January, someone cut a hole in the fencing and spent time with Star before the reindeer began experiencing health problems. In February, someone sprayed unknown substances on Star, worsening his condition.

Despite efforts to save Star, including potential surgery to remove any blockages, the outcome is uncertain. The bond between Whitehead and Star is strong, with Star being a significant part of Whitehead’s daily life.

The tradition of keeping reindeer in Anchorage dates back to the 1950s when pioneers Oro and Ivan Stewart brought the animals to the city. The reindeer named Star has had a mix of long and short lives, with some living to an old age and others meeting tragic ends.

Anchorage police have posted surveillance footage of the suspect in hopes of identifying them, but as of now, no viable tips have come in. The incident has shocked the community and raised concerns about the safety and well-being of local wildlife.
