Wisconsin kicks off spring wildfire season with high activity

Wisconsin is currently experiencing an increase in wildfires as temperatures rise and the state dries out. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging the public to check fire danger before burning outdoors, as the main cause of wildfires this time of year is burning brush and leaf piles. Already, nearly 170 wildfires have burned over 450 acres, which is four times more than usual at this time of year.

Fire officials anticipate that the fire danger will continue to be on the rise in the coming weeks until significant precipitation occurs. Burning permits are required in DNR Protection Areas when the ground is not completely snow-covered. Permits are free and can be obtained online or by phone. It is important to check daily burn restrictions to ensure burning is done safely and responsibly.

Sparks from recreational equipment, campfires, and hot ashes from fireplaces are also contributing factors to wildfires. The public is advised to properly dispose of ashes to prevent fires. It is also crucial to check local ordinances and restrictions regarding burning. Stay informed by checking the DNR’s website for current fire danger levels and wildfire reports.
