Delange Augustin, 31, is facing federal charges after allegedly attacking a flight attendant and swallowing rosary beads while onboard a regional flight to Miami. Augustin was charged with misdemeanor battery, misdemeanor obstruction of police, and a felony count of criminal property damage after a Monday altercation on an American Airlines flight from Savannah to Miami. During the flight, Augustin allegedly had a violent outburst, including kicking a flight attendant, punching and kicking a passenger, and attempting to attack another flight attendant. The pilots decided to turn the plane back to Savannah Hilton Head airport due to the altercation. Augustin’s sister, Medjina Augustin, told authorities that her brother believed they were being followed by Satan’s disciples and that he attacked the flight attendant because “he hurts evil.” Augustin claimed that he ingested the rosary beads as a weapon of strength in spiritual warfare. He was eventually subdued by airport police and taken to a hospital for evaluation before being detained at Chatham County Detention Center. American Airlines stated that safety and security are their top priorities and thanked the crew and passengers for their understanding. It is unclear if Augustin has retained a lawyer at this time.
