The NTSB is recommending severe restrictions on helicopter traffic near Ronald Reagan National Airport following a midair collision that killed 67 people. The crash, which occurred near the nation’s capital, was the deadliest in the U.S. in over 20 years. NTSB Chairperson Jennifer Homendy called on the FAA to immediately implement restrictions, citing an intolerable risk to aviation safety. The collision involved American Airlines Flight 5342 and a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter on a training exercise. Among the victims were six individuals affiliated with the Skating Club of Boston, who had been traveling back from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita. Other recent aviation incidents in North America include an air ambulance crash in Philadelphia, a plane crash in Nome, Alaska, and a runway incident in Toronto. Despite these tragedies, officials maintain that domestic flying is still very safe, with fatal crashes being rare occurrences. The investigation into the DCA disaster is ongoing, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
