The Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus has introduced a bill to establish Vel Phillips’ birthday as a special observance day in Wisconsin schools. Vel Phillips, a pioneer in Wisconsin politics and civil rights activist, was the first Black woman to break barriers in the state. The bill, authored by State Rep. Supreme Moore Omokunde, aims to ensure that Phillips’ legacy is remembered and taught in schools to inspire future generations to continue fighting for justice and equality.
Vel Phillips was not only the first African American woman to achieve many milestones in Wisconsin politics but also a relentless advocate for civil rights. Born in Milwaukee in 1924, she broke barriers by becoming the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Wisconsin Law School and the first African American woman elected to the Milwaukee Common Council. Throughout her career, she fought against housing discrimination and became the first female and non-white Secretary of State in Wisconsin.
After leaving office, Vel continued her advocacy work by serving on various boards and supporting minority communities and social justice causes. She passed away in 2018 at the age of 95, but her impact continues to inspire leaders, activists, and policies. By establishing an observance day in schools to honor her legacy, Wisconsin lawmakers seek to ensure that Vel Phillips’ contributions are never forgotten.
