Sun Prairie Becomes First Wisconsin Municipality to Achieve 100% Renewable Energy Target

The City of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, has become the first municipality in the state to achieve 100% renewable energy for all city operations. This change not only benefits the environment but also saves money for residents. The city’s switch to renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, has led to significantly lower electricity bills, with a drop of $40,000 since implementing the infrastructure in 2024.

City Sustainability Manager Rose Daily stated that the initial investment in solar panels, funded mainly by grants, has resulted in long-term savings for the city. This cost-saving measure could potentially lead to lower taxes for residents in the future.

Renewable energy advocate Sam Dunaiski of RENEW Wisconsin highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of transitioning to renewable energy sources. He emphasized the positive impact on job creation, air and water quality, and climate change mitigation.

The City of Sun Prairie plans to continue its sustainability efforts with a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This model of renewable energy usage could serve as a blueprint for other municipalities in Wisconsin and beyond.
