Nonprofit from Wisconsin called on to assist in search for missing boater in Lake Oconee.

A Wisconsin-based nonprofit, Bruce’s Legacy, known for recovering drowning victims, has been called in to help find an Atlanta man, Gary Jones, who went missing on Lake Oconee last month. Jones, a teacher and coach at Westminster School, was out on the lake with his fiancé, Joycelyn Wilson, when their boat was found circling the lake with Wilson’s body inside. Since then, search teams have been unable to locate Jones, despite extensive efforts from local authorities, volunteers, and organizations like Bruce’s Legacy.

The difficult search conditions on Lake Oconee, including underwater trees and a nearby dam, have made it challenging to find any sign of Jones. Department of Natural Resources game wardens, local deputies, and the United Cajun Navy have all been involved in the search. Despite utilizing cadaver dogs, divers, and underwater technological devices, efforts to locate Jones have been suspended until further notice.

Sheriff Howard Sills of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office expressed frustration at the lack of progress in finding Jones, noting the extensive resources being deployed for the search. The community remains hopeful for a resolution as search efforts continue.
