He received his first mallets from vibraphonist Lionel Hampton at the age of 5 and began playing the vibraphones at 17. With a career spanning over six decades, Ayers released numerous albums and became a pioneer in jazz-funk, with his music being sampled by many artists. He collaborated with R&B and hip-hop artists such as Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, and Tyler, The Creator. Ayers’ family plans to hold a celebration of his life in the future. Ayers’ passion for music and his impact on the music industry will be remembered and he will be sorely missed.
