Wisconsin may permit high school athletes to earn money from their personal brand

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association and high school athletic directors are currently debating whether student athletes should be allowed to profit from their name, image, and likeness. With 40 states already allowing high school athletes to participate in NIL deals, it seems inevitable that Wisconsin will have to address this issue. A proposal to allow student-athletes to engage in promotion and revenue opportunities not associated with their school team was rejected last year, but a new constitutional amendment will be brought forward for a final vote this month. The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in 2021 paved the way for student athletes to profit from education-related payments, and more states are passing laws to allow high school players to sign NIL deals. Wisconsin legislators are ready to introduce a bill to allow NIL deals for high school students if the proposal fails at the WIAA annual meeting. Despite some opposition, many believe that allowing high school athletes to participate in NIL deals is the way of the future, providing opportunities for athletes to benefit financially from their talents.
