A couple from Belize, Rafael Seirafe-Novaes, 40, and Beatriz Rapoport De Campos Maia, 29, allegedly tried to force their way onto an American Airlines flight at Miami International Airport over the weekend. The couple became angry over missing a flight and being denied entry after the plane had already boarded. Maia reportedly pushed two people and threw coffee on them in the process. The couple ignored signs and commands from airline staff, leading to their arrest by Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Seirafe-Novaes was charged with resisting officers, trespassing, and two counts of battery, while Maia was charged with battery and trespassing. In an interview with CBS News, Maia denied the allegations, claiming that the coffee fell accidentally. Seirafe-Novaes also denied resisting law enforcement, stating he had scrapes on his knees from the arrest. The couple claimed they had missed their connection to Cancun, where they had planned to celebrate their recent engagement.
American Airlines stated that acts of violence are not tolerated, and they are cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation. The couple’s court records did not immediately show whether they had obtained legal representation. The incident highlights the importance of following airport rules and regulations, as well as the consequences of disruptive behavior while traveling.
