A seventh inmate passes away at problematic Wisconsin maximum security prison

Another inmate has tragically died at Wisconsin’s oldest prison, the Waupun Correctional Institution, marking the seventh death at the facility since 2023. The latest victim, Damien Evans, passed away at just 23 years old for reasons that have not yet been disclosed. The Department of Corrections is investigating the incident, but details remain scarce. Evans was serving a seven-year sentence for armed robbery and bail jumping.

This tragic news comes less than a year after the then-warden and multiple staff members were charged with misconduct and felony inmate abuse following the deaths of inmates Cameron Williams and Donald Maier. These deaths raised red flags about the conditions and treatment at the facility.

In addition to these tragedies, federal investigators have been looking into a smuggling ring involving prison employees, and a class-action lawsuit has been filed by inmates alleging mistreatment and lack of health care. The prison, which was built in the 1850s, has faced calls for closure from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. Governor Tony Evers recently proposed a plan to convert Waupun into a medium security center focused on job training for inmates amidst ongoing concerns about the facility’s operations and the well-being of its inmates.
