Wisconsin lawmakers divided over House GOP budget proposal in DC Wrap

This past week, Wisconsin’s congressional delegation has been embroiled in debates over a GOP budget resolution that aims to cut spending by $2 trillion and provide $4.5 trillion in tax cuts over the next decade. Democrats have expressed concerns that the resolution would lead to cuts in programs like Medicaid and Social Security in order to provide tax cuts to the wealthy. Republican lawmakers defended the budget resolution as a way to eliminate waste and make tax cuts permanent.

Additionally, U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin introduced a bipartisan bill to allow prescription drugs to be imported from Canada in an effort to lower costs for Wisconsin residents. Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Tony Wied introduced a bill to repeal funding for electric vehicle charging stations, criticizing President Biden’s infrastructure program.

In light of recent town hall meetings, U.S. Reps. Glenn Grothman and Scott Fitzgerald faced protests from constituents over various issues, including President Trump’s international policies and Elon Musk’s involvement in the government. And U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden traveled to Israel to meet with government officials and military members.

On the international front, European leaders had expressed concerns about former President Joe Biden’s age before he dropped out of the presidential race, according to former U.S. ambassador Tom Barrett. Barrett also highlighted concerns in Europe over the Trump administration’s impact on U.S.-European relations.

Overall, Wisconsin’s congressional delegation continues to navigate a range of contentious issues, from budget resolutions to international relations, as they work to address the needs and concerns of their constituents.
