The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) will be showcasing two student-athletes every week during the 2024-25 academic year, with a focus on one male and one female from each of its eight institutions. The “Student-Athlete Spotlight” Q&A segments will highlight the selected individuals’ achievements and experiences, with the first spotlight featuring Kyla Dickson from UW-La Crosse, a senior in Women’s Gymnastics majoring in Exercise and Sport Science. Dickson chose UW-La Crosse for its academic and athletic opportunities, and she is actively involved in various campus organizations such as the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Athletic Training Association.
Dickson enjoys competing in the WIAC for its competitive nature and being a NCAA Division III student-athlete because of the community and energy within the division. Her favorite Culver’s menu item is fries with cheese sauce, and she aspires to become an athletic trainer for a collegiate gymnastics team in the future. One of Dickson’s greatest sports moments was at the 2023 NCGA Championships, where her team placed second and she finished third on beam, earning All-America honors. Off the court, she likes to visit the bluffs or go out for ice cream with her teammates.
Dickson’s advice to younger student-athletes is to remember to have fun and do it because you love it. She describes herself as a leader and has a dream of visiting France, seeing Morgan Wallen in concert, and watching the Olympics in person. In addition to her athletic talents, Dickson is known for making delicious chocolate chip cookies and has a pre-game ritual of getting a strawberry acai refresher with lemonade from Starbucks and listening to her meet day playlist before competitions.
