DOGE laid off workers who assisted Wisconsin farmers in dealing with volatile weather conditions.

Laurie Nowatzke, an associate director of the Midwest Climate Hub under the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was terminated from her position due to the Trump administration’s federal workforce cuts. Nowatzke, who comes from a family with a history of public service, was left without much notice to wrap up her work after receiving a termination letter citing performance issues. Despite excellent performance reviews in the past, Nowatzke filed an appeal with hopes of getting her job back.

Similarly, meteorologist Josh Bendorf and researcher Tracy Campbell were also terminated from the Midwest Climate Hub as probationary employees, receiving little explanation for their dismissals. Bendorf, known for launching the Wisconsin Ag Climate Outlook, is now looking for new job opportunities while Campbell laments the loss of valuable research for the public. These cuts represent a significant loss for early-career scientists and public servants supporting crucial missions that cannot easily be replaced in the private sector.
