WIAA and UW Athletics have extended their agreement for State Championship facilities

A recent announcement made at a media conference on Tuesday revealed that the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and the Wisconsin Athletic Department have agreed to an eight-year contract extension, allowing the WIAA access to facilities at the University of Wisconsin (UW) to host high school State Championships in various sports through the spring of 2033. This partnership showcases the UW campus and the City of Madison as premier destinations for WIAA State Tournaments.

The State Tournaments held at UW facilities drew a paid attendance of over 196,000 in 2023-24, with an estimated economic impact of $22.2 million according to a recent study. This extension of the agreement recognizes the mutual commitment to provide memorable experiences for student-athletes and spectators attending WIAA State Tournament events. UW Director of Athletics, Chris McIntosh, expressed his excitement about welcoming teams and fans to Madison for years to come.

The WIAA Executive Director, Stephanie Hauser, emphasized the importance of showcasing the WIAA Championships on the UW campus and looks forward to continuing the partnership to serve member schools and student-athletes. The WIAA oversees interscholastic athletic programs for over 500 high schools and sponsors 30 State Tournaments, making it the first state high school association in the nation, formed in 1896 after the first State Track & Field Championships were held on the UW campus in 1895.

This agreement reaffirms the commitment to providing top-notch facilities for showcasing the best high school student-athletes and teams in the state, creating unforgettable memories for participants and spectators at iconic UW venues such as the Kohl Center, Camp Randall Stadium, University Ridge, and Goodman Diamond.
