Dittrich introduces a bill to reinstate transgender sports ban

State Rep. Barbara Dittrich, R-Oconomowoc, has reintroduced legislation that would ban transgender women and girls in Wisconsin from playing on teams or in sports that align with their gender identity. This move comes after the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association adjusted its policy to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting transgender women and girls from competing in women’s sports. The National Collegiate Athletic Association has also updated its policies in response to the executive order.

The proposed legislation would require transgender women and girls in K-12 schools, University of Wisconsin schools, and technical colleges to play sports according to the sex they were assigned at birth. Governor Tony Evers and Democrats have criticized the bills as discriminatory, with Evers vowing to veto any legislation that makes the state less inclusive for LGBTQ individuals.

Fair Wisconsin Executive Director Abigail Swetz has expressed opposition to the proposed legislation, stating that they will continue to fight against discriminatory bills. A poll conducted by Marquette University Law School found that 70% of respondents prefer transgender athletes to compete based on their sex assigned at birth rather than their gender identity.

Despite the pushback, Rep. Dittrich remains determined to ensure that transgender athlete policy aligns with Trump’s executive order. The bills have gained support from co-sponsor Sen. Rob Hutton, who believes that only biological women should compete against each other. The debate over transgender inclusion in sports continues, with advocates emphasizing the importance of supporting all athletes regardless of their gender identity.
