Wisconsin sturgeon spearing bounces back after warm 2024 season

Sturgeon spearing in Wisconsin saw a significant rebound this year, with spearers harvesting more than twice as many lake sturgeon compared to the previous year. The season, which started on Feb. 8 and ended recently, yielded 943 sturgeon, up from 432 in 2024. Despite the improved ice conditions, spearers did not reach the Department of Natural Resources’ harvest caps, which are in place to protect the sturgeon population from overfishing.

Margaret Stadig, a lake sturgeon biologist for the DNR, attributed the increased harvest to better ice conditions this year. Sturgeon fisherman, Zack Wendt, also noted the improved ice conditions and highlighted the camaraderie that sturgeon spearing fosters among friends and family.

The sturgeon spearing community is known for its dedication and tradition, with spearers eagerly awaiting the season and celebrating the population of sturgeon. Overall, the 2025 sturgeon spearing season was a success, bringing together both seasoned spearers and newcomers to the sport.
