A recall of milkshakes has been initiated after being linked to 11 deaths and multiple serious illnesses, primarily in long-term care facilities and hospitals. The FDA confirmed the recall which affects all 4 oz. packs of Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes. The manufacturer, Prairie Farms, based in Indiana, issued the recall in response to the outbreak, which has affected 38 people across 21 states, with 27 hospitalized and 11 fatalities. The FDA noted that the outbreak may have started seven years ago, with the shakes being provided to residents and patients in care facilities. Listeria monocytogenes was identified as the cause of the illnesses, with the first reports dating back to November 2021.
Lyons Magnus, the food service company, took immediate action to cease the purchase of products from the affected facility and remove impacted products from distribution. The CDC found that the outbreak could be traced back to 2018, though details on the specific infections were not provided. Symptoms of Listeriosis, caused by listeria infection, include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and in severe cases confusion, stiff neck, and convulsions. Pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk for complications. This recall follows a listeria outbreak in 2021 that resulted in one infant death and illnesses in 10 adults linked to ready-to-eat meat products in four states.
