UK-based SME, Flyby Technology, has made strides in the defence industry by focusing on innovation and rapid deployment. Originally offering training courses for Beyond Visual Line-of-Sight scenarios, Flyby has now developed the Jackal UAV with a focus on outcomes rather than just selling aircraft. The Jackal, with its robust airframe and hybrid powerplant, has a maximum payload of 50kg and is capable of various roles including combat scenarios, logistics, and medical resupply.
In March 2022, the Jackal had its maiden flight in Turkey, where Flyby partnered with FlyBVLOS Technology and Maxwell innovations to overcome limitations on drone testing in the UK. The company identified a market gap for a low-cost Battlefield Airborne Interdiction platform, leading to successful trials with Thales’ Lightweight Multirole Missile.
Flyby is now working on the Vandal, a hypersonic electronic warfare UAV, and the Mayhem, a low-cost cruise missile/decoy. Plans for the Jackal’s deployment in Taiwan have been reported, showcasing the flexibility and importance of these innovative platforms in future conflicts. Despite challenges in funding and ethical concerns about the defense industry, Flyby continues to push boundaries to deliver efficient and effective solutions.
