The annual American Birkebeiner ski festival is currently taking place in Hayward, Wisconsin, attracting tens of thousands of participants and spectators to the Northwoods. This year’s event, which runs from Feb. 19-23, is the largest cross-country ski event in America. Executive director Ben Popp highlights the event’s economic impact of nearly $25 million on the Hayward region.
In addition to the main 55-kilometer race, the Birkie Week features various events, including adaptive races, relay races, and a unique Giant Ski competition. The festival also includes the Barkie Birkie skijoring event, where dogs pull their skiers through downtown Hayward.
Despite weather challenges, Birkie coordinators were able to manufacture snow for the trails, ensuring a successful event. Popp emphasizes the importance of adapting to changing climate conditions to maintain the tradition of the American Birkebeiner. With participants ranging from 3 to 86 years old, the festival continues to attract a diverse group of skiers and fans, making it a highlight of winter in Wisconsin.
