Officials say NYC art dealer’s murder in Brazil was part of a murder-for-hire plot orchestrated by estranged husband

Daniel Sikkema, a New York man, was indicted for allegedly hiring someone to kill his estranged husband, wealthy art dealer Brent Sikkema, who was found brutally stabbed in Brazil in January 2024. Daniel was charged with murder-for-hire resulting in death, murder-for-hire conspiracy, conspiracy to murder and maim a person in a foreign country, and passport fraud. Prosecutors stated that Daniel hired a hitman, known as CC-1, to kill Brent while he was in Brazil. Daniel allegedly sent payments to CC-1 and their romantic partner in Cuba to facilitate the murder, concealing the source of the funds. The hitman, Alejandro Triana Trevez, was arrested by Brazilian police for his involvement in Brent’s murder. Daniel was arrested and pleaded not guilty to the charges, facing a mandatory penalty of life in prison or death if convicted. Brent Sikkema was the co-owner of the Sikkema Jenkins & Co. gallery in Manhattan, which later changed its name to Sikkema Malloy Jenkins. The gallery, founded in 1991 by Brent, has been a prominent fixture in the New York art scene, moving from Soho to Chelsea in 1999. U.S. Attorney Danielle R. Sassoon vowed to pursue justice for U.S. citizens murdered abroad, emphasizing the severity of the alleged crime. Daniel Sikkema’s attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
