A judge ruled that the Trump administration must temporarily allow the disbursement of foreign aid, following a lawsuit filed by nonprofit groups and organizations that work on international aid projects. The lawsuit challenged President Trump’s executive order that implemented a pause on U.S. foreign aid, ordered by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The judge’s decision allows foreign assistance that was in place before Trump took office to continue, but does not enjoin the President or the Executive Order itself. The ruling stated that the administration has not contested evidence of harm to American businesses caused by the suspension of foreign assistance.
The Global Health Council, one of the plaintiffs, praised the ruling as a vital step toward restoring U.S. foreign assistance programs. The White House had targeted the U.S. Agency for International Development after Trump’s executive order, resulting in the termination, furlough, or administrative leave of thousands of employees and contractors. Trump and Elon Musk have argued that USAID is wasteful, with Musk calling it a “criminal organization.”
The judge instructed the parties to file a joint status report for further legal proceedings. The ruling is seen as a win for organizations working on international aid projects, allowing them to resume their work and showcase American values of compassion, leadership, and commitment to global health and prosperity.
