Iair Horn, an Argentine Israeli, was kidnapped from his home in kibbutz Nir Oz along with his brother Eitan, who remains in captivity. Sasha Alexander Troufanov, a Russian Israeli, was also abducted along with his family in the same incident. Troufanov’s father was killed during the abduction, while his female relatives were released in November. The Islamic Jihad, an Iranian-backed group, has announced that Troufanov will be freed separately.
Hamas recently announced that they will resume the process of hostage-prisoner swaps after initially threatening to indefinitely postpone them due to Israeli violations of a truce. The first phase of the deal, which is expected to last 42 days, has seen the incremental release of 16 out of 33 hostages.
The kidnapping incident occurred during a Hamas-led terror attack on October 7, 2023, where 1,200 people were killed and 251 were captured, according to Israeli officials. In response, Israel launched a military offensive in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 48,000 Palestinians and the displacement of most of the territory’s population.
The situation remains tense as negotiations continue between the various parties involved. Troufanov’s imminent release provides a glimmer of hope in an otherwise grim and violent conflict between Israel and militant groups in Gaza.
