China is ramping up its use of advanced technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in its military and digital disinformation strategies in order to strengthen its global political influence. International experts are raising concerns about the potential impact on global security as a result of these actions. Scientists linked to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have developed an AI tool called ChatBIT, based on Meta’s Llama model, for military intelligence purposes. The PLA has also used Llama 2 for electronic warfare training and police surveillance in China. China’s strategy of utilizing AI for disinformation purposes poses significant risks as it can target critical infrastructure and military capabilities.
China has been engaging in influence operations online, using fake news networks and strategic narratives disguised as legitimate content. Google has blocked hundreds of sites associated with a group known as Glassbridge, identified as operating fake news networks to influence specific audiences. These sites pose as independent media and spread disinformation disguised as credible news, targeting regions worldwide.
Additionally, a new threat called Paperwall has emerged, where Chinese influence campaigns create fake local news outlets in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The sites combine copied articles, Chinese state content, press releases, and conspiracy theories. The rise of fake news sites and AI-generated propaganda poses a challenge to legitimate journalism and requires a critical approach from the public when consuming information.
Experts warn that the use of AI in disinformation campaigns is a growing concern and emphasize the need for both journalistic innovation and public discernment in light of the increasing spread of misinformation. As China continues to leverage advanced technology for military and political purposes, the global community must remain vigilant to safeguard against potential threats to security and stability.
