Additionally, a new threat called Paperwall has emerged, where Chinese influence campaigns create fake local news outlets in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The sites combine copied articles, Chinese state content, press releases, and conspiracy theories. The rise of fake news sites and AI-generated propaganda poses a challenge to legitimate journalism and requires a critical approach from the public when consuming information.
Experts warn that the use of AI in disinformation campaigns is a growing concern and emphasize the need for both journalistic innovation and public discernment in light of the increasing spread of misinformation.
