Highlighting Kiara Bissen, Student-Athlete at UW-Eau Claire

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) will be featuring two student-athletes each week during the 2024-25 academic year for a “Student-Athlete Spotlight” Q & A segment. The segments will be posted every Thursday, with individuals selected by their institutions. The WIAC Student-Athlete Spotlights are presented by Culver’s.

This week’s spotlight is on Kiara Bissen, a senior at UW-Eau Claire and a member of the Women’s Swimming & Diving team. Bissen chose UW-Eau Claire for its kinesiology program, the energy on the swim team, and the beautiful campus. She is also involved in teaching swim lessons, studied abroad in Italy, and has participated in multiple research studies on campus.

Bissen enjoys competing in the WIAC and being a NCAA Division III student-athlete because she gets to compete against athletes she knows and there is a strong emphasis on academics. Her favorite Culver’s menu item is Pretzel Bites, her favorite Flavor of the Day is Dark Chocolate PB Crunch, and her favorite non-athletic spot on campus is Booth, where the swim team eats lunch.

Her greatest sports moment was setting records on relays with her sister on their summer team. Bissen’s dream job is to become a stenographer and three things on her bucket list are to see a Formula 1 race in person, visit London in the winter, and catch a pigeon with her hands. She has a talent for setting puzzles and her pre-game ritual involves pressing her goggles onto her eyes and bouncing her leg on the block.

For younger student-athletes, Bissen advises them to be present and savor every moment of their college career. One word that describes her is “motivated” and she looks up to Sydney McGuine.
