Deadly Wildfires Strike Los Angeles Area, Celebrities Step Up to Help Victims
A devastating series of wildfires hit the Los Angeles area on January 7th, resulting in the loss of at least twenty nine lives and leaving thousands homeless. Families were left scrambling for shelter and communities were left traumatized. While many struggled to recover, some celebrities took action.
In recent years, the concept of performative activism, where celebrities engage in activism for their own benefit, has drawn criticism. However, some celebrities have shown genuine concern for the victims of the L.A. fires. Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyonce, Eva Longoria, Eagles, and The Weeknd have all made significant donations to help those affected by the wildfires.
Gwyneth Paltrow, through her company Goop, pledged to donate over $2 million in products to organizations assisting victims. Beyonce’s non-profit organization BeyGOOD donated $2.5 million to the L.A. Fire Relief Fund. Eva Longoria gave $1 million to the California Community Foundation. Eagles donated $2.5 million to a FireAid benefit concert, and The Weeknd contributed $1 million to the L.A. Wildfire Relief Fund.
If you’d like to help as well, there are many ways to do so. Donations to organizations such as the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank or Project HOPE can make a difference. If you’re in the area, consider volunteering with the American Red Cross or local shelters. Whether through donations or volunteering, there are many ways to support those affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles.
