Wisconsin winter sports affected by lack of snow

The lack of snowfall this winter has left snowmobile trails empty in Plymouth, impacting local snowmobile clubs and economies in Southeast Wisconsin. Todd Walber, secretary of the Plymouth Snow Rangers, noted the challenges they are facing this season, with warming winters and decreased snowfall totals over the years. Despite the lack of snow, the club has been using snowmaking machines to create tracks for events like snowmobile racing.

In the past, the trails used to be open for up to eight weeks each winter, but this season, the club has had to make do with minimal snowfall. Local clubs are hopeful for late-season snowfall to open the trails, with the Plymouth Snow Rangers maintaining over 40 miles of trails year-round. Even during the off-season, members are working hard to ensure the trails are ready for riding when snow finally arrives.

With snow in the forecast, clubs across the region are cautiously optimistic for one more chance to open the trails. Snowmobiling is more than just a winter activity for Walber, as it allows riders to appreciate Mother Nature and the sights they encounter on the trails. The Plymouth Snow Rangers are hoping for at least eight to 10 inches of heavy snow to create a solid base for the trails and provide one last opportunity for snowmobilers to enjoy their beloved winter pastime.
