Justice Department orders charges against NYC Mayor Eric Adams to be dropped

Acting U.S. Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove has ordered federal prosecutors in New York to drop corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The charges include bribery and fraud for allegedly receiving gifts from wealthy Turkish nationals and a government official. Adams has pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence, stating that the charges are politically motivated. The dismissal of the charges is without prejudice, meaning they could be refiled in the future. The charges have not yet been dismissed, and a motion would have to be filed by prosecutors in the Southern District of New York for the dismissal to take effect. The case will be reviewed by a Trump-appointed U.S. attorney once confirmed. Damian Williams, who brought the charges against Adams, resigned after President Trump won the 2024 election. An attorney for Adams reached out to the Justice Department leadership in late January to discuss dropping the case. This is an ongoing story and updates will be provided as they become available.
